Promoting success one feedback at a time

Effective feedback is the cornerstone of assessment for learning. Like assessment, feedback must be planned with the teacher's pedagogical alignment in mind. Feedback should therefore be consistent with the pedagogical objectives of the work. Objectives that have been shared with learners even before they have done the work. People won't be able to progress if they don't know the objectives of the job.

Each type of feedback has its own purpose and context, but in all cases it must be forward-looking and transferable. The learner needs to be able to understand it so that he or she can apply it in future work. What are the "right moves"? What can the learner reproduce in another context? The better he understands it, the more committed he will be to the task. It's the authenticity of the feedback that's key, comments that are specific to the learner and associated with his or her work. Forget "very good" and opt for "when you wrote ...., you did well ..." . The more concrete the feedback, the greater the learner's learning progress. Studies show that audio feedback is more likely to improve success, as the learner feels engaged in the process. (Facchin 2015)

Here are a few ways to improve your feedback with Zelexio:

1. Use the audio commentary to mention the strengths of the work while mentioning the learner's first name. This will promote success, motivation and the emotional bonding of the relationship.

2. Select one written comment per evaluation criterion to ensure that your feedback is precise and detailed.

3. Allow the learner to make a self-assessment of the work and share it with you. This will give the learner a better understanding of your pedagogical assessment objectives and encourage rich feedback based on pedagogical discussion.

The main objective is to promote learning. To achieve this, the teacher should always opt for feedback that enables the learner to understand precisely his or her strengths and challenges. The more personalized and detailed the feedback, the more motivated the learner will be to listen or read it.
